So basically here you are trying to get exact 4 gallons by measuring both bottles. But my interviewer asked me how to maintain 4 litre in each bottle (5litr & 3litr bottles), you can take out water as many times as you want, and I told him there is no way possible to put 4 litres in the 3-litre bottle and if you really want to maintain 8 litre in both bottles then there is no need to do calculation fill both bottles and you got 8litres… he reject me.

If you have a separate 4 gallon jug, fill the 5 and fill the 4 all the way up……….

    1. Fill the 3 gal 3 times into the bucket.
So you have 9 gal in the bucket.
Then fill the 5 gal with the 9 gal of the bucket until its full
… so 4 liters should be left! 🙂

In Die Hard 3 they only had the 2 jugs. You fill the 5 and pour into 3 leaving 2 in the 5. Empty the 3. Pour the 2 into the 3. Fill the 5 and and then fill the 3 from the 5 leaving 4.

So you've wasted 3 gallons of water just because you need to fill exactly 4 gallons in that 5 gallon jug.

Wouldn't be easier to fill the 5 gallon jug dump three gallons into the 3gallon jug and this will leave 2 gallons of water in the 5 gallon jug so next pour the 2 gallons into the bucket and repeat all the steps one more time and you will have 4 gallons.

Fill up the 3 and pour in the 5 repeat 1 time. Then you have 1 gal in the 3. Water the plants w/the 5 and then pour 1 gal into 5. Then fill the 3 and pour into 5 now you have 4 gallons

Fill 5 gal. bucket half way; 2.5 gallons. Fill 3 gal. bucket half way; 1.5 gallons. Pour 1.5 gal. bucket into 2.5 gal. bucket. 2.5 + 1.5 = 4 gallons.

The way he displayed the riddle shows that I can fill the 5 gallon and pour it into the EXTRA bucket that's 4 gallons, until the 4 gallon is full. Congrats, shaunteaches, you played yourself.

    Theres an easier way

You fill the 3 gallon then pour it to the 5 gallon bottle the you fill the 3 again then pour pour that to the 5 so you will have 1 left in the 3 after throw out all the one in the 5 then pour the 1 from the 3 gallon into the 5 then fill up the 3 and transfer that to the 5 gallon then you will get 4 gallons

easy you pour the water into 5 and dump the 5 into the 4 and you're done(if real life) now a hard version of this would be, There is a 5-liter jug full of water. There is also an empty 2-liter jug and an empty 3.5-liter jug. You can pour the water back and forth between the jugs, but you can't add any water. How can you end up with 2.5 liters in both the 5 liter and the 3.5-liter jugs

Heh, I just solved this riddle yesterday in kotor.
    fill the five gallon tank
    transfer to the three gallon
    dump the three gallon
    transfer to the three again
    fill the five tank
transfer to the three a third time

three gallon tank is full, five gallon has four gallons

(SPOILERS) and boom, you've destroyed the vent on the underwater facility and pleased the bigass shark.

also fill the 3 and dump it into the 5, you end up with 3 gals in the 5, then you fill up the 3 again, dump what you can into the 5 from the 3 which is 2 gallons, 3 the first time and 2 the second, you have exactly 1 gallon in the 3 gallon jug, now dump out the 5 gallon jug, pour the gallon from the 3 into the now empty 5, fill the 3 once again and add the 3 gallons to the one gallon which is now in the 5 gallon jug giving you exactly 4 gallons in the 5 gallon jug.

refill the 3 gallon and pour into the 5 gallon and you have 1 gallon left in the 3 gal. and pour that into the 4 gal.bucket ..

3.now you have 2g in the 5g jug
4.pour the 2g into the bucket and the 3g on your plant
5.repeat the same thing and you have 4g

fill up the 3 and dump into 5 and fill 3 again… and dump into 5… so now you have I gallon left in the 3.. and 5 gallons in the 5.. so you dump out the 5.. so now you have a empty 5 so you pour the 1 gallon left from the 3..to the 5… so you have a empty 3 and a 1 gallon in the 5.. then you fill up the empty 3 and pour in the 5.. so now you have 4 gallons of water.. Ya Welcome… 1+3=4
