Thank you. Those of us in this field are aware that the technology could be used for good or bad, but we believe that it is a social responsibility to ensure that it is used for good. Many good applications could include search and rescue, environmental monitoring, deployment of other robots, and so forth.

I encourage you to listen to Raffaello D'Andrea's opinion on this:
"Raffaello D'Andrea: The astounding athletic power of quadcopters" at 15m 13s

Mr. Thomas, I congratulate you & your team on your ingenuity & diligence. But I can't help but ask you how this is not a prototype for a "flying Terminator?" And if you understand the consequences of your creation?

I recall my email exchange with an A.I. designer at GA Tech. He was arrogant, even irate that I dared think he could ever lose control over his creation. He refused to acknowledge that his goal is to create a being with independent thought, which by design cannot be controlled.

Easy. The reason why weaponization comes up is because of a body of evidence over time for previous endeavours, the rule of thumb of which can be described as : If it can be used as a weapon, then it will be used as a weapon.

Observe. Gather Evidence. Note result. When things repeatedly happen you have a pattern. When you have a pattern you can then extrapolate to give an idea of what the future holds.

It behooves a person to learn from history, to better deal with the future.

the eventual use is flying and grabing! it can be used for good or for bad. just like your hand! why do so many people always fear new technical edvancements and are afraid, that things like that would 'only' be used for war? Everything can be weaponized, but there are a hundred other purposes for the same thing.

Mechatronics engineering seems more like the engineering you would need to design and build a system like that. I studied Mechatronics engineering and you learn about many engineering disciplines like Mechanical, Electrical, Robotics and Control theory to name a few. It's a very diverse field of study.

Technically, everyone on the team is Mechanical, but projects like this require knowledge of other disciplines as well.

    Very cool, nice work.

Although you kinda have to step back and slightly worry about the explosion in development, research and increasing capability of these mini drones. . . and what eventual use they will be put to.

We now have mini drones that can fly through open windows, navigate obstacles, pick things up, put things down and shoot guns ?

    Hmmmmm !

No problem with that but I think you miss the point. Let's say a chimpanzee make a stick to actually grab ants. It's an actual invention. But the chimp can also use it to beat another one.

Now if you still don't understand yet that anything you create even if you think about it and analyze, somebody will come up with a different and disruptive usage that you would never think about.

Also you mix inventing something and exploiting the invention (bubble and growth).

THINK, REFLECT and ANALYZE. That's what we do. We clearly have not learned, as a species from past mistakes. So many things we have invented are superfluous and unnecessary and exist solely for the purpose of marketing and economic "growth" (bubbles) which inevitably and catastrophically burst. We need to stop destroying the earth on which we depend on, and stop destroying each other which we also depend on.

Yes we should stop inventing. We should stop and drop everything and truly examine, our actions and ourselves as a species. We are headed for destruction along with all our inventions. Our inventions are pushing us towards catastrophe.

I can't fucking stand all these idiots who are opposed to any sort of technological advance. Obviously the only application for is going to be a military one if you immediately assume that's all it's good for, without stopping to think about the possibilities. There's all sort of dangerous tasks, where machines like this can take people out harm's way.

Sure, but anything can be militarized when you think about it. So should we just stop trying inventing because somebody might turn it into a weapon?
