I have always seen in Davey's first stanza..him and a long forgotten or first love. Or the death of innocence of love and passion. We held hands on the last nite on Earth..as if to say that the death of child like innocence ..was the ending of the understanding of things in a matter that neither made no sense or just didn't fucking need too. Love and passion . The marriage of the two.

Many speculate what the poem is about, but I personally think it depicts the bombing of Hiroshima. Being that nighttime keeps being mentioned in the first verse, Hiroshima was bombed later in the day, or night. 'Death is a midnight runner'. There is the Ota river in Hiroshima that leads into the Hiroshima bay, also mentioned in the poem. And of course, sky crashing down is explainatory. Particularly, 'The echoes of the past broke the hearts of the unborn' would depict how future generations would continue to suffer from radiation. 'Bitter elegies of savagery and eloquence
Of blue and grey" is particularly haunting, as singing these elegies of the blue and the grey, where the plane that dropped the bomb was a grey color, and the blue reflecting from the ocean, perhaps? There is so much to this poem that makes it beautiful, haunting, sorrowful all at once. It's deep.

My first girlfriend and I loved AFI. We fell asleep together for the first time listening to this band. This track wasn't listed on the CD, but we both woke up and listened when this started playing. This song will always haunt me. And will always make me think of you, Audrey. My ticket wasn't good for two.

@echelonislurve Exactly!! Emotions aren't "emo", they are a part of the human condition.

A childs despair of living on a horbal world much like the one we live in. the childs life of a fisrts love, fisrt loss, being left bewilder and confused.
A man's lover and all the cuts from life all the despair and sorrow all the shit life throws at you. understaning you can not escape the sorrow of life.
An elderly man beaten down and he understands life he knows what hes gone through the final dispar the final sorrow when you reach it there is no angles only darkness and eternal wondering

@ma2t2t6yg Yeah…I mean, if you take the words in the most literal way, it definitely sounds like the world is ending, in a literal way. But yeah, you can always interpret the sentences in anyway you like…I guess I just don't like to put too much thought into it.

Simply, the poem is about the end of the world. If you read the words, that's exactly what the three are talking about. But as always, poetry can be interpreted many different ways.

I remember when I first heard this
It scared me half to death because of the pause.
I'm so grateful I heard this, I'm not that great with poems or literature, but I know for a fact it's beautiful.

Uhm, who said you had to be emo to like amazing music? Specifically, AFI?
That's being a little stereotypical, don't you think?

Anyways, I love this song- it's completely amazing.
