Geronimo E-KIA – A poem by the 1491s

Accompanying music by A Tribe Called Red

On May 1st around 3:30pm President Obama received a message from a Navy SEAL saying “Geronimo- E KIA” the code meaning Osama bin Laden is dead. We humbly disagree.

Geronimo was a product of his environment. A human. One with flaws. One with enough history that the person charged with defining who he is can shape the narrative any which way he likes. People chase him today, just as they did then. His story, or peoples versions of it, lead us to this point where we are today. But this poem isn’t about Geronimo is it?

    A'ho,

I don't think you meant Clearlake California, but my great grandma survived The Bloody Island Massacre there. I don't know how she did, she was so young. But she survived. She's Apache/Pomo.

Gernimo was indeed a coward. He was a brutal and merciless killer. Why Apache today look up to him is beyond me.

Thank you so much for this I was deeply offended by the use of this call sign and regret that the US government would bestow a name of great honor to those that hurt with out cause and live as the rich and greedy …

The 10 lost racketeering groups use this mickey mouse bull crap to steal the money and chase us off-you gotta think "where does the energy go"–It goes to chasing off the native french and bringing in more 10 lost.(there is a big difference from people acting 'indian" and "stealing the money"-if their not stealing the money-WHO CARES)–People that act like a "butt hurt" mama's boy about someone's conflict-that was probably a zoonotic conflict or combatants–don't deserve anything but punch in the face.—-People equate me with "money" etc. with the iowa money give away–mix that with the homo's I get forced out of society-I don't see any future in this whiny mickey mouse bull-only more 10 lost and poison plague and treachery–Food for thought–'who are the white people" in 10 lost–???? The non-judaic native's like the native french–This country is not for me–just racial persecution and a dog out by a junkie  native hooker slumming for a dope kickdown.

What I understood was a people reclaiming their heritage and their identity by not letting others dictate who they were, who they are, and what they will be.  It is in regaining the narrative of one's own history that allows knowledge to foster into self-empowerment and freedom. A'ho

I enjoy the 1491s, but as an ndn none of us are exempt from colonization and this video is proof of that. This video was disappointing and it hurt to watch. The legacy of geronimo and the spirit of geronimo would've sided more with people like Osama or Castro or Che Guevara or Sitting Bull because Geronimo was anti the U.S government that massacred his people and made the chiricahua apaches into political prisoners in florida.  Geronimo would've never wished for his people to be U.S SNIPERS, TRIBAL COUNCIL LEADERS THAT ARE STRUCTURED TO IMMITATE THE U.S GOVERNMENT SYSTEM. GERONIMO KILLED U.S SOLDIERS. GERONIMO WAS ANTI U.S VALUES BECAUSE HE FOUGHT TO EXIST IN THIS WORLD AS A TRADITIONAL CHIRICAHUA MAN. he was anti-system so to compare his "legacy" to only day to day natives surviving within U.S structures like schools and military personnel is cutting him short and would probably enrage him (in spirit heheheh). In fact i find it interesting that the video had no mention of tribes or natives burning american flags because it's representative ideals do not allign with Native way; i'm surprised that nothing was mentioned of tribes or people fighting against gold mines contaminating the ground water on shoshone land, or ndns that blocked ignorant tourist from interrupting a Winnemem puberty ceremony, or ndns who fight against indian mascots, or medicine people that remind people that our medicine is connected to land, or ndns that confront police officers in front of White Clay, ndns laying it all down to protect sacred sites… Nothing is mentioned of these modern day warriors that in many ways are more exemplary of the rebellious legacy left by geronimo- to care for one's people and to protect one's way of life.
The U.S.A compared Osama to Geronimo by using Geronimo as a code name to mean : enemy. In other words, this country views the very people they massacred and assimilated in their schools and churches as terrorist. This is very telling of the governmental stuctures that run this entire country. Its heart breaking to see a homeless verteran shaking a cup for change. It's sucks that many of our people die abroad just like Geronimo who did not die on his traditional homeland since president Roosevelt prohibited him from returning home. I feel veterans are examples of ndns who either chose war as a method to survive in a struggling world made that way by US white spremacy or ndns who chose to believe in the lies that we are fighting an enemy abroad to protect freedom because to think otherwise and think against the grain like Geronimo is in fact a harder way to live and carries it's own consequences. In reality ndns have more in common with those we are sent to kill abroad for natural resources and land. Veterans are victims of the U.S agenda. veterans chose to believe they were fighting for freedom because to acknowlege and think of the truth- that this government doesn't care about you or me and seeks to do what they did here to other lands far far way,  is harder swallow . colonization is painful. Geronimo knew this.
